What we cover
The ATO has released an updated list of issues that it will be focusing on when it comes to private groups for the 2025-26 year. While many of the items on the list don't come as a surprise and are consistent with previous years, there are some specific items that practitioners need to be aware of. This includes the ATO's new focus on the situation where franked dividends are distributed from a trust to a newly incorporated bucket company, family trust distribution tax risks and concerns around clients who undertake business restructures.
We also take a look at some recent tax cases which deal with common issues faced by practitioners and their clients, including a case which looks at important timing issues around trust distributions and a case which deals with the strict deadlines for claiming GST credits.
The Government is in the process of introducing some significant developments which will impact on a wide range of practitioners and clients. In this session we take a look at the practical impact of these developments and what needs to be done to ensure that practitioners and clients comply with new obligations.
This includes the Payday Super rules which are due to commence from 1 July 2026 and which will impact on almost every employer across the country. We also explore the obligations that will apply to accounting firms under the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing rules from 1 July 2026.
We will also provide an update on the progress of legislation relating to the $20,000 instant asset write-off threshold for the 2026 income year and look at some of the practical issues associated with using AI tools within an accounting practice, especially when it comes to researching tax issues.
